A massive fire broke out at the popular Karu Market on the outskirts of Abuja city center on thursday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 8 pm and spread rapidly across the market.

We hear the fire began in the informal sector, where highly flammable materials are commonly found.

Despite initial efforts by firefighters from the Area 10 fire station, 16 kilometers away, the fire continued to rage due to ongoing construction within the market.

FCT Commissioner of Police, BEN IGWEH, said he dispatched operatives to the scene to prevent looting by hoodlums as traders attempt to salvage what’s left of their wares. Additional fire trucks were sent to ensure the fire was brought under control.

The situation is still developing, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
